LANSING, MICH. — (May 14, 2018) — The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) is asking the community to join more than 400 walkers and supporters expected at their annual Greater Lansing Kidney Walk to fight kidney disease on Sunday, June 10 at Hawk Island County Park, 1601 East Cavanaugh Road, Lansing. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 12:30 p.m. Park admission, including parking, is free of charge for those participating in the walk.

Participants can register online before the walk date or onsite on June 10. Walkers over the age of 12 are asked to raise at least $20 to offset the cost of the venue, entertainment, and parking. Walkers aged 3-12 are asked to raise at least $10. Walkers aged two and under are free. Participants who raise $100 or more receive a walk t-shirt, plus other incentives. For more information or to register, visit www.nkfm.org/walks or call Ryder Comstock at the NKFM at 800-482-1455.

This year the NKFM will transform an area of Hawk Island County Park into an energetic atmosphere for people with kidney disease, living kidney donors, transplant patients and their loved ones as a way to celebrate their lives. Unlike a traditional charity walk, the Kidney Walk goes the extra mile to support those fighting kidney disease with an event full of celebration including special food (appropriate for those fighting the disease), massages and giveaways. The day will include music, food and beverages, kids activities, demonstrations from Impression5, a visit from Sparty, and much more! Stay after the Walk and enjoy Hawk Island’s swimming beach, playground, hiking trails, paddle boats, fishing, Splashpad and beach volleyball!

“We’re asking our community to continue helping us fight kidney disease, prevent the causes of kidney disease and support those with the disease. This year our finanical goal is to raise $95,000,” said Linda Smith-Wheelock, NKFM President and CEO. “In return, we create a fun-filled atmosphere to celebrate lives and fight the disease, all while enjoying a day at Hawk Island with friends and family. We encourage everyone to join us.”

The Greater Lansing Kidney Walk will draw attention to the importance of early detection and kidney disease prevention, while raising funds in support of kidney patients and their families. As in past years, WILX TV 10 news anchor David Andrews, will be the emcee of the 2018 Walk.

The Stockbridge Area Arts Council will be sponsoring the “A Day in the Village Art Show” at the Stockbridge Township Hall. It will be held Friday, June 15, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday, June 16, from 10:00 Am to 4:00 PM. This annual event gives local artists a chance to display their work for others to enjoy. Some of the media used in the past were oils, water colors, color pencil on suede mat, photos on basswood, and mixed media, to name a few.

Each year the SAAC centerpieces the work of a featured artist. This year the Art Show honors the legacy of Ronald Fillmore, founder of the annual event, who together his wife Hester were devoted supporters of the arts in our community.

For a fee of $5.00, artists can submit up to three pieces of art. Awards will be presented for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, as well as Honorable Mention. In addition, a prize for People’s Choice will be awarded and is determined by votes cast by visitors to the show on Friday and Saturday.

If you would like to participate in the art show or for more information, entry forms will be available at the library sometime in April or go to the Stockbridge Area Arts Council Facebook page for updates and copies of the entry forms when they become available.

Bombas is a sock manufacturer that follows a one-for-one business model similar to Tom’s Shoes. For each pair of socks purchased from Bombas, a pair is donated to charity. Outreach wrote a grant to Bombas for over 800 pairs of socks last year and this spring Federal Express delivered eight large boxes of colorful, well-made Bombas socks in all sizes to Stockbridge for families in need.

So, if you are in need of new socks, mark your calendar and look for us at the Market on June 22. The only cost is a smile! J
