    NEW TEEN CENTER OPENING SOON!!!
by Samantha Young & Bonnie Davidson, Crossroads Community Church Student Ministry Directors

Crossroads Community Church is proud to present our new Stockbridge Teen Center, which will be held in the Stockbridge Activity Center (SAC) at 305 W Elizabeth Street.

Our goal is to have the Teen Center Open M-F from 2:30-5:30 for students in grades 6-12.  It will offer them a fun, safe environment for doing homework (with the assistance of HS Honor Society students), participate in both indoor/outdoor activities, play video/other games, have snacks and interact with other students and adults who care about them.  This will be a healthy alternative to walking around town or being alone until parents get home from work.  Hours of operation will be dependent upon adult volunteers but we don’t foresee that being an issue.  We’ve had so much positive feedback from our community and people want to be involved.

The Teen Center hours of operation will strictly be for students to hang out and have positive interaction.  Crossroads will be holding their Youth Group there on Wednesday evenings from 6 pm-8 pm for any students (grades 6-12) who want to come…all are welcome!

A special Thank You to Mike/Leah Dalton and Ed/Lori Zick for allowing us to have this opportunity.  It truly takes a community to make this happen and we’re thankful for all the support we’ve received so far.

There will be an Open House on September 4 from 12 pm-5 pm, with access at the front West entrance of the building, as well as the back of the building.

This is a dream we’ve had for many years and we’re thrilled to see it become a reality!

The Crucible is a self supported endurance hike to raise money for charity. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Semper Fi Fund. Semper Fi Fund provides immediate financial assistance and lifetime support to combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. They deliver the resources they need during recovery and transition back to their communities, working to ensure no one is left behind.
Endurance hiking is defined as any day hike of at least 20 continuous miles along backcountry trails. We chose 22 miles along the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail to represent the average number of veterans lost every day to suicide. The Crucible will be held on September 21, 2019. The hike will begin at Green Lake (18500 N M-52, Chelsea, MI 48118), and will end at Big Portage Lake (11700 Seymour Rd., Grass Lake, MI 49240). There will be 12 hours to complete the hike (8:00am-8:00pm). Aid stations will be at four to six mile intervals where volunteers will be posted with log books. Participants will be given a tee-shirt at the start of the event and will receive a patch if completed within the 12 hour time frame.

    • A week before the exchange, carefully dig and divide the number of plants to trade and gather up seeds and produce.
    • Pot plants individually in roughly Quart size containers with enough soil to thrive and water them till the exchange. Package seeds in an envelope.
    • Please Identify and label plants & seeds: Name, flowering; color & time of year, shade or full sun.
    • Arrive at 9:00 a.m. to set out your plants, seeds and/ or produce for the exchange.
    • At 9:30 am each plant, seed or produce provider will draw a number and line up according to the number.  When you reach the front of the line, you will be able to pick one plant, seeds or produce and then you will return to the end of the line.
    • Plant, Seed or produce provider may go through the line as many times as the number of items they brought.  (Example; bring 5 plants and you may go back through the line five times)
    • The event takes place rain or shine, so bring your umbrella or sunscreen and water.

Thank you for sharing your plants, seeds and produce.

In a workshop series called Guiding Good Choices being offered in Stockbridge, parents will learn how to improve family bonding and reduce the risk of drug use among their children.  From September 25 to October 23, this five-week program will be offered every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Stockbridge Activity Center, located at 305 W Elizabeth Street in Stockbridge.

Guiding Good Choices is an interactive program for parents of children in grades 4 through 8. In a lively and open atmosphere, parents will learn specific strategies to help their children avoid drug use and other adolescent problem behaviors, and develop into healthy adults.  Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines on drugs, learn and practice skills to increase their children’s family involvement, and strengthen family bonds.

Dr. J. David Hawkins and Dr. Richard F. Catalano of the University of Washington developed the Guiding Good Choices program. Their research has shown that when children are bonded to parents, school and non-drug using peers, they are less likely to become involved in drug use or other behavior problems.

SRSLY and St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea are sponsors of the workshop.  This series is free to attend, however, registration is required.  Childcare is available upon request.  Parents that attend all five sessions will be entered into a drawing to win a gift card.

To register for the workshop or for more information, please visit www.srslystockbridge.org/ggc/ or contact Emily Griswold at 734-593-6806 or Emily.griswold@stjoeshealth.org.
