Lady Panthers Move Into First in the GLAC

The Stockbridge girls basketball team came away with its biggest win of the season Friday night as the Panthers pulled away from Leslie to move into first place in the GLAC all by themselves after a 41-23 win.

The teams entered the contest with identical 6-1 records in the GLAC, but the Panthers took care of the Blackhawks for the second time this season to take over the top spot in the conference.

Gwen Rogozinski and Madison Mazuca scored five points each as the Panthers took a 10-4 lead after one.

The Panthers benefited from cold outside shooting by Leslie as the Blackhawks struggled from outside the three-point line all night.

Stockbridge was short-handed with two players with the SHS InvenTeam in Key Largo, Florida so they brought sophomore Joslyn Caskey up from the JV and she came up huge for the Panthers.

Caskey scored four points in the second quarter to help the Panthers take a 19-11 lead in to the halftime break.

Joslyn Caskey moved up from JV for the game and finished with nine points

Neither team could muster much offense in the third quarter, but Kaylee Dalton scored five points to help the Panthers keep the eight point lead 24-16 at the end of the third.

A Mazuca triple and a basket by Caskey to start the third quarter as the lead grew to 29-16 and forced a Blackhawk timeout.

They would never be threatened again as the Panthers would push the lead to 20 points by outscoring the Blackhawks 17-7 in the fourth to pull away for the win. Grace Hall scored six in the quarter, including two big put backs after offensive rebounds

The Panthers shot well from the line by hitting 10 of 14 free throws, including six of eight in the fourth to help seal the win.

Rogozinski led the Panthers with 10 points, while Caskey and Grace Hall each finished with nine. Mazuca chipped in with eight points and Dalton five.

The Panthers improved to 7-1 in the GLAC and 12-3 overall. They have two big road games next week when they travel to Lansing Christian to try to avenge their only league loss Tuesday night and then to Olivet Friday night.
