Stockbridge Area Senior Center to open in January 2022
Information from SASC
A grassroots group of residents has been hard at work turning the dream of a local senior center into a reality. The group is pleased to announce the Stockbridge Area Senior Center (SASC) will be opening its doors in January 2022!
The senior center is located in the old “fire barn” at 219 E. Elm St. in Stockbridge. The township of Stockbridge has generously made improvements to the building in preparation for a variety of educational and recreational activities. These may include chair yoga, chair cardio drumming, book club, quilting, crafts, cooking, gardening, games and bingo. Educational topics may include health care, insurance coverage and how to fill out tax returns. Additionally, meals will be provided by the Tri-County Office on Aging.
Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with evening hours on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Additional hours will be offered as soon as demand warrants and staffing allows.
For the first two years of operation, SASC will have most expenses covered through a significant grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. In addition, while SASC awaits the completion of its 501(c)(3) nonprofit application process, the Chelsea Senior Center will act as the short-term fiduciary to ensure that any donations made are considered tax-deductible.
A website is under development and will be operational in January. Questions can be directed to Betti Wetherell, director and board president, at stsc49285@gmail.com or 734-926-5617.
