American Legion Post 510 holds Memorial Day Service at Oaklawn Cemetery

Incoming Post Commander Steve Witkowski welcomes those in attendance and reminds them, “May we never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. May their courage continue to inspire us and may their memory always endure.”

Memorial Day dawned sunny and bright in Stockbridge this year. Perhaps those who have gone before us managed to pull some strings to ensure the Memorial Day Service at Oaklawn Cemetery would have the best of weather conditions after a week of clouds, rain, and cooler-than-average temperatures.

Whatever the reason for the perfect day, our community has the Mackinder-Glenn American Legion Post 510 to thank for another heartfelt Memorial Day service honoring the area’s deceased veterans, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Since the Revolutionary War, 1.1 million Americans have died defending the United States in wars and combat actions. Master of ceremonies Greg Uihlein shared a few of these stories.
A bell was tolled as each name on the interred veterans list was read.

Day is done. Gone the sun. … Safely rest. God is nigh.
