Strong leadership builds strong communities: The dedicated SASC board of directors is a perfect example

by Rachel Stanley
Behind every successful community is a group of dedicated individuals working quietly and faithfully to guide its mission. At the Stockbridge Area Senior Center, that leadership comes from a deeply committed board of directors whose contribution ensures the center remains a welcoming, vibrant, sustainable resource for older adults throughout the community.
Under the leadership of board president Alexa Ten Eyck, the board plays an essential role in shaping the future of the senior center while preserving the values that make it such an important gathering place for local residents.
A strong board of directors provides more than oversight. It brings vision, accountability, advocacy, and connection. Board members volunteer countless hours reviewing policies, supporting programming, and planning for long-term growth. They ensure financial stability. Board work often happens behind the scenes, but the impact is seen every day in the smiles, camaraderie, activities, and services available to center participants.
For many older adults, the senior center is a place where friendships are formed, wellness is encouraged, and our community thrives. Programs that support healthy aging, social engagement, nutrition, education, recreation, and volunteerism all depend on thoughtful leadership in addition to responsible stewardship. A committed board helps make those opportunities possible.
One of the greatest benefits of a strong board is its ability to represent the needs and voices of the community. Board members connect the senior center with local organizations, businesses, volunteers and residents. These relationships strengthen partnerships and open doors for collaboration, fundraising, and expanded programming that benefits seniors across the Stockbridge area.

Good governance also ensures the organization remains mission-focused. The board works closely with staff and volunteers to support the center’s purpose while adapting to the changing needs of today’s active aging population. Whether addressing transportation challenges, expanding wellness opportunities, or creating new social activities, effective leadership helps the center remain responsive and relevant.
President Alexa Ten Eyck and the board of directors recognize that investing in older adults strengthens the entire community. When seniors remain active, connected, and engaged, everyone benefits from their wisdom, experience, volunteerism, and continued participation in civic life. Supporting healthy aging is not simply about services, it is about creating dignity, belonging, and opportunity for every generation.
The success of the Stockbridge Area Senior Center reflects the power of teamwork. Staff, volunteers, members, donors, other participants, and board members all contribute to creating a positive environment where people feel welcomed and valued. The board of directors serves as a foundation for that success, helping guide the organization with integrity, compassion, and dedication.
Society is continually learning the importance of active aging. Thanks to the commitment of its essential board of directors, the Stockbridge Area Senior Center continues to grow as a place of connection, purpose, and support for older adults in Stockbridge and their families.
