Active Aging: Stockbridge area has plenty to celebrate during Senior Center Month
by Stacey Mason
Does anyone else feel as though September came suddenly out of nowhere? How does time rush along as we age, yet creep when we’re younger and waiting for the next fun thing?
September is a sentimental time for me. I was raised on a country dirt road until I was ten years old. This meant few contacts with friends until school started back up, except for one friend who lived on the same road. Back to school meant new clothes, school supplies, gossiping, and trading snacks on the bus. I loved getting new school supplies! I still take immense pleasure in a great pen, a new set of markers, and a dry-erase board.
Now that I have grown children, September means something altogether different. I’m now an observer of the first day of school photos for my friends’ kids and grandkids. And although we aren’t responsible for getting anyone ready for school, September is still a critical time for me because September is Senior Center Month!
We have exciting activities planned this month. As I sit in our Stockbridge Area Senior Center writing this, I wish I could share all of the details with you. Please check out our Facebook page and website for updates. I can tell you the public will be invited to our center to view much of the artwork created by our members, who are incredibly talented. We are also planning a day in September when we bring our center activities to the Stockbridge Township Square.
August was a busy month and deserves a recap here. Our members attended a Lansing Lugnuts game, provided at no cost to attendees thanks to a grant. All had a fantastic time! If you haven’t seen the pictures yet, look at either Facebook or our website. We also held our first-ever golf outing at Hankerd Hills Golf Course in Pleasant Lake. It was a successful and fun day! I want to thank everyone who came out to play, volunteer, and help with our silent auction. The winning team of Gary and Geoff Wonders, Rick Odor, and Mark Shelhardt took home free play vouchers at Timber Trace and new golf balls. Our closest to the pin winners were Benn Kunzelman, representing the men, and Jo Mayer, representing the women, each winning a $100 Meijer gift card. Kudos to all our fabulous golfers; I think they’d agree they were all winners that day for helping support our Senior Center!
Below I’d like to recognize our incredible hole sponsors and all those who donated items to our silent auction:
| Total Local Advertising | Carney’s Garage | University of Michigan Athletic Dept. |
| Positively Chiropractic | Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home | MSU Athletic Department |
