Waterloo Area Historical Society’s Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Social
May 19, will be presenting Bill Christen and the Interurban Railways. The public is welcome to join us at 2pm for his presentation, at the Waterloo Farm Museum, 13493 Waterloo-Munith Rd., Grass Lake, 49240. Here is a sample of his presentation.
“The interurban railways (electric powered "street cars") were a popular means of transportation early in the twentieth-century. A person living in Waterloo Township could go to Jackson or Chelsea (or a dozen stops in between) and catch a electric railway car that could take him or her to Chicago or Detroit with connections to other cities beyond Michigan. For a dime one could also travel an array of small towns between Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo. For the most part the interurban line In Jackson and Washtenaw Counties paralleled the Michigan Central Railroad tracks.”
