Friday, Dec. 8. fourth grade students from Heritage Elementary School toured the Capitol in Lansing, Michigan. As the group viewed the building, they were awed by its magnificent structure. The original building completed construction and opened in 1879, then was restored and rededicated in 1989.

Students met Representative Tom Cochran (D-Mason), who took them into the House of Representatives chamber. There the students became involved in an interesting and informative question-and-answer session.

“Representative Cochran took our class onto the floor of the House of Representatives where citizens are not allowed unless accompanied by a representative or senator, if in the Senate room,” fourth grade teacher Katherine Andersen said. “It was great!’”

The classes also visited the Michigan Historical Center, which consists of the Library of Michigan, the Michigan History Museum, and the Archives of Michigan.

“This was a great field trip for our fourth graders,” Andersen said, “as it was both fun and educational.”
