Lady Panthers Clinch GLAC Title

It has been 13 years since a Stockbridge girls’ basketball team won a league title and the Lady Panthers needed a win over Perry Tuesday night to clinch the outright GLAC crown.

They left little doubt with a dominating second half as the Panthers pounded the Ramblers 41-18 to claim the league title. They improved to 10-1 in the GLAC with one game remaining at Lakewood Friday night.

The Panthers defense did a number on the Lansing area’s leading scorer Alyssa Welsh, holding her to just three points on the night. Welsh entered the game averaging nearly 20 points a game and her only basket of the night came in the opening minute, giving the Ramblers a 3-1 lead.

Stockbridge started slow as Perry took a 6-3 lead in the first, but a Grace Hall triple and a free throw by Chelsey Asquith gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead after one.

Grace Hall scored nine points against Perry

Madison Mazuca scored five points early in the second to give the Panthers a 14-12 lead, when Gwen Rogozinski scored six quick points in the final 1:30 to push the Panthers lead to 20-14 at the break.

The second half was all Panthers.

Stockbridge pitched a shutout in the third as they outscored the Ramblers 13-0 to take control of the game with a 33-14 lead after three. Kaylee Dalton scored six in the third to help the Panthers push their lead to 19.

They would scored 17 straight points to start the second half and Perry did not score until the six minute mark of the fourth when the Panthers were leading by 23-points as Stockbridge would cruise to the win and the GLAC title. They outscored the Ramblers 21-4 in the second half.

Rogozinski scored a team high 13 points, while Hall finished with nine.

Asquith and Dalton scored six each, while Mazuca added five and Joslyn Caskey two.

The Panthers improved to 15-3 overall on the season.
