Looking Back in Time – June

by Diane Rockall

Looking back in time often has us think of long ago, but it can actually mean yesterday or one hour ago. This month we will recall more recent past events for our area, the country and the world.

At the end of June 2008, Ruth Camp announced the sale of the Stockbridge Town Crier. Also in June of that year William Reynolds was named volunteer of the year during Day In The Village festivities.  Other events during the weekend of activities were  Baby awards which went to Alexis Hightower, Grace  Dancer, Chase Sommer and Dillan Powers. Toddler awards were presented to Dalton Schotte and Ella Blum.

Dylan Dyer, 13, received a plaque from the Unadilla Fire Chief for heroic acts during a fire in his family home in the same month.

In June 1998 the Town Crier reported 119 students participated in May 31 Commencement activities. Class president Jaffer Odeh was unable to attend. He was hospitalized following a serious auto accident on May 24. His speech was taped from his hospital bed.

Also in June 1998 Stockbridge State Bank celebrated 90 years in the community.

Later in that month three teens were charged with the murder of a 63 year old Unadilla resident.

Nationally in June 2008 Hollywood’s Universal Studio had a severe fire damaging many movie icons. The King Kong Exhibit and the Back to the Future clocktower were among them. The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins to win the Stanley Cup.

In June 1998 the Red Wings also won the Stanley Cup. On the world stage the European Central Bank was formed in Brussels to regulate European Union currency.
