St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea and St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor hospitals have been named to the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® list.

  • St. Joe’s Chelsea has been named #20 in the Top Small Community Hospital category in the U.S.
  • St. Joe’s Ann Arbor has been recognized as #3 in the 15 Top Major Teaching Hospital category.

This is the third time since 1993 that St. Joe’s Chelsea—a joint venture hospital with Trinity Health and Michigan Medicine—has been named to the Fortune/IBM Watson list. It’s the 12th time since 1996 that St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor—a member of Trinity Health Michigan—has been recognized by this organization’s list.

“St. Joe’s Chelsea is proud to be a small community hospital that delivers consistently exceptional care to residents throughout the surrounding area,” said Nancy Graebner, president and CEO, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea.

“We are so honored to be named to this list, which is one of the most notable recognitions for a hospital based on real data and results,” said Alonzo Lewis, president, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Livingston.

IBM Watson Health identified the top hospitals from a rigorous evaluation of 2,675 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S. The annual list recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health. Some of the performance indicators that were measured included survival rates, complications, healthcare-associated infections, readmission rates, inpatient expenses, and more.

This year’s ranking of top hospitals also introduced a measure that evaluates hospital contributions to community health, with a focus on equity. In this case, hospitals received scoring credit for meeting a certain number of best practice community health standards. This new measure led to ranking changes for more than one-third of the 100 hospitals.

Lewis was pleased to have St. Joseph Mercy hospitals evaluated on this new equity measure. “This year, I am delighted to see that the work hospitals are doing in the area of community health and improving equity is one of the metrics, and deeply proud that the work we are doing in this area has been recognized.”
