Obituary: Duane Walz

Duane Walz, formerly of Waterloo Township, Michigan, entered into Heaven on Thursday October 21, 2021. He was born to Harold and Florence (Pickett) Walz in Rowe Memorial Hospital in Stockbridge, Michigan, on December 7, 1936. He left behind those whom he dearly loved including his wife of nearly 66 years, Mary Ann; his 7 children: Chuck (Cindy), Mike, Doug (Theresa), Wendy, Denny (Erin), Rusty (Sarah), and Amy.  His grandchildren were another of his earthly treasures: Brian, Kristy, Kayla, Johnathon, Amanda (Chris), Justin (Reaghan), Amber, and Matthew; step-grandchildren Shawn (Brittany), Samantha (Jared), and Darby (Tyler); 12 great-grandchildren; and sister Janice. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Jacob.

Duane graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1954. His education continued at Jackson Community College. To provide for his family, Duane was a farmer.  In addition, he worked at Chelsea Milling Company for 18 years, served his community as Waterloo Township Supervisor, served on the board at Michigan Townships Association, Jackson County Library Board, and Jackson County Parks Board. He was a member of the former Waterloo First United Methodist Church.

Duane was known for his hard work ethic, his sharp memory, his never-ending abundance of “dad jokes”, and, most of all, the love he gave to his family which will be missed greatly. His final wishes were to have a simple farewell with his family present, and the family will honor those wishes with a private service of interment at the Munith Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, he wished that gifts would be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Rives Junction Youth Haven Ranch.

  4. Mary Ann, so sorry to yours and family to hear of Duane’s passing. Know how you must feel as Charlie and I had our 64th anniversary in May. So many years and so many memories. Will have you in my thoughts and prayers. Some days we really miss everyone in MI. We’re too old now to drive back and neither want to fly. Still have good memories. Love, Yvonne and Charlie Adkins.

  5. It is with sadness that I Iearn that Duane has passed on. My friendship with Mary Ann and Duane has been such a joy for several years. I always marveled at Duane’s sharp memory. He had such a quick wit and his smile was incredible. This is how I wish to remember him. A happy, smart, witty man who was not shy about throwing in a little wisdom for me when he thought I needed it. He knew how to make me feel good with complements of my family and myself. He could basically read one’s mind and knew the right time and things to say. It was always a pleasure to stop in from time to time to visit Mary Ann and Duane and those times will be missed, but will not stop as I equally adore Mary Ann.
My sympathy to the entire family.

    1. Mary Ann and family:
Jim told me of Duanes passing. We so enjoyed visiting you with my Mother during her summer visit. I wish we had made it this year as it would have been our last. Jim passed away two weeks ago. So the family grow even smaller. Im hoping we will still be able to keep in touch. Yes who could resist that sense of humor. And not admire his strong sense of family. I will miss him dearly. I have solace in his strong religious foundation. Im sure well meet again. Deepest condolences. Carol and Mike Vichinsky and family
