On Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2:00 p.m., at the Ella Sharp Museum Community Room (3225 4th Street in Jackson), the community is invited to attend this moving and surprisingly joyful theatrical experience: “A Joyride in Memory Care,” written and performed by award-winning playwright, director, and actor Rick Sperling.

This powerful one-person play explores the poignant humanity of the dementia journey—an increasingly common reality for families everywhere. Drawing from his mother’s real-life experience in a memory care facility, Sperling brings warmth, humor, and celebration to a topic often shrouded in sadness. Audiences will meet Doris, a trailblazing educator and arts advocate, as her memories fade but her spirit continues to shine in often hilarious and touching ways.

Through respectful humor and heartfelt storytelling, “A Joyride in Memory Care” honors the continuing abilities and dignity of those living with dementia, encouraging audiences to see beyond loss to the vibrant lives still unfolding in memory care communities.

Following the performance, attendees will be invited to join small-group conversations led by dementia advocates and caregivers. These discussions will offer space to reflect on the performance and explore broader questions around the role of persons living with dementia in our communities.

This social impact theater piece is supported by Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Jackson Community Foundation, Dementia Friendly Services, Jackson County Medical Care Facility, and the United Center for Caring.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. The event is designed to be welcoming to all, with free on-site respite care available and refreshments provided.
