Sowing Inspiration ~ hen and chicks preserve memories

Dear Gardeners,

This arrangement of hen and chicks by Teri B., of Munith, preserves the memory of when her children were small. These succulents are a great choice for difficult to plant areas.

The Garden Contest was read and enjoyed by many. Who doesn’t love a beautiful photo of someone’s artistic garden creation? So let’s try a new direction for a “Garden Inspiration Column.” We’re asking readers to take a photo of their garden, plant, bush or tree (or a friend’s) and share the inspiration for planting it in a few words.
Contact [email protected]. Feeling shy? Send the photo and phone number or email address, and we will reach out to help in sharing your inspiration.
Happy and peaceful gardening,
Joan Tucker

When I asked Teri B., of Munith, about her inspiration for this eye-catching arrangement of hen and chicks, she said it preserved the memory of when her children were small. These 2- and 4-year-old shoes, along with a pair of her husband’s worn out work boots and outdated women’s high heels complete this arrangement.
Hen and chicks grow in a hot or cold environment that can be rocky, dry and nutrient-challenged. This rosette succulent plant sends out multiple shoots called babies or chicks. Succulents don’t have to be watered often, making them carefree plants. Hen and chicks are a great choice for difficult to plant areas, so get creative and have some fun planting this succulent in your garden spaces.
