Student of the Month for June: Brandon Nelson honored as leader

By Cindy Lance

Brandon Nelson has leadership skills that are hard to miss as a sophomore at Stockbridge High School. School principals selected him for the prestigious HOBY Student Leadership Seminar this summer.

“Brandon is a well-rounded leader that has been recognized by our staff,” said Jeff Trapp and Joe Wenzel, principals of Stockbridge Senior and Junior High School.

Teachers Jennifer Leuneberg and Chelsea Szczembara said Brandon is always willing to help others in the classroom.

“(He) participates in class discussions, and attempts to find solutions to problems that have no easy answer,” they said.

His friends see him as a nice and caring person who is smart, athletic and funny.

The son of Melissa Dilley and Jeffrey Underhile, Brandon has a brother, Collin, who is 20. Brandon credits his mother as an inspiration.

“She has worked so hard for everything she has, provided so much for our family, and pushes me to be my best,” he said.

Another guideline he said he tries to follow comes from a Bible verse, and is a large part of his faith.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” it states.

When not in the classroom, Brandon enjoys football, basketball, hunting and fishing. Math is his favorite subject, and he hopes to become a physical therapist.

Brandon loves Stockbridge schools and the community because it’s where he “met his best friends and is close to everything.”

And it’s clear Brandon is excelling at Stockbridge schools, as several other accomplishments came his way. This year he also received the Football Honorable Mention award and is proud to have reached his workout goal.
