Student of the Month: Seventh-Grader Jose Ortiz-Martinez

   by Cindy Lance

Seventh-grader Jose Ortiz-Martinez loves soccer so much, he hopes to become a pro one day. But until then, Jose is busy being a star student in the classroom at Stockbridge Junior High.

This effort has been noticed by his teachers and Jose is being honored as December’s Student of the Month.

Teacher Sarah Vowels said “not only does Jose work diligently on all of his classwork, but he is also a very thoughtful student personally.”

“He is always ready to help a fellow student,” she said. “Jose makes Stockbridge Junior High a better place each and every day.”

Last year Jose was a straight A-student, with a love for science and math (and a good laugh with friends at lunch).

He has attended Stockbridge schools, along with his older sister, two younger sisters and younger brother, all his life. Along with his siblings, he lives with his dad, Jose, and mom, Betty.

Jose said his mom supports him so much. Without her, he wouldn’t have made it this far in his soccer career, he added.

Another positive influence in his life is Lionel Messi, an Argentine professional soccer player.“ (He) was just like me when he was my age,” Jose said.

When Jose was still playing baseball, his coach gave him a baseball and the “heart” award.

He always came to practice with a smile. He lives by the motto “never give up.” When he has a bad game, he tries hard again the next time.

In addition to hoping to become a professional soccer player one day, Jose dreams of “being remembered for doing something great.”

With his determination and drive, it appears he is dribbling down that path toward a successful future.
