Ways to share literacy activities as a family

by Sherri McConnell
CADL Stockbridge Head Librarian

November is National Family Literacy Month. If you have young children or grandchildren, it’s always a good time to include activities that boost literacy skills. And it’s easy to do! Activities for infants to preschoolers include drawing a happy face and talking about what makes you happy, doing a puzzle together, taking a walk outside and identifying the sounds you hear, drawing on the sidewalk with chalk or visiting the children’s section of your local library. More daily literacy activities can be found in Early Learning Calendars. You can find it online at cadl.org/raisingreaders or at any CADL branch.

The Stockbridge Library offers several ways to share literacy activities with your children and grandchildren. There are two family story times each week, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30-11 a.m. These programs are designed for children up to 6 years old and offer read-aloud stories by Miss Rose or Miss Cady, songs, crafts and play to reinforce literacy skills. The toys and puzzles we offer in the children’s area are all chosen to encourage imagination and fine motor skills. Besides books, we offer Raising Reader Backpacks containing themed books, toys and activities; and digital resources like ABCmouse and BookFlix. You can find more information at cadl.org/learn.

Decorate a doughnut on Nov. 15 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. An expert from Groovy Donuts of Williamston will be at the library to demonstrate decorating techniques. There will be doughnuts and supplies to make your own edible work of art, while supplies last.

The Friends of the Stockbridge Library Silent Auction will be earlier this year, Nov. 4-17. Donated items suitable for gift-giving, gift baskets, handcrafted items and gift cards and services from local businesses are welcome and can be dropped off at the library from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2. All proceeds are used to support the Stockbridge Library.

Capital Area District Libraries’ Stockbridge Branch is located at 200 Wood St. For more information, call 517-851-7810 or visit cadl.org.
