Community impacts of local markets are economic and social

The Open Air Market is so much more than just a place to shop. Each week, we work to bring community members together to support our vendors while creating opportunities for connection, collaboration, and community. Some may imagine that a local farmers market is simply a place for vendors to showcase their offerings, but it is so much more than that. A local market such as ours helps build a stronger community by giving local businesses, farmers, makers, and residents a place to come together, support one another, and build meaningful relationships.

This summer in particular has been an important one for local farming vendors who have supplied fresh produce to our communities. Farmers worked hard to plant, pick, and provide their local produce to ensure families still have access to fresh vegetables. This is a great example of what we aim to offer at the Open Air Market: opportunities for community members to purchase fresh offerings directly from local vendors while supporting local small businesses.

Community is not built solely through formal organizations, but rather through repeated, casual interactions at places just like the Open Air Market. This is one of the reasons we are grateful to be located at Veterans Memorial Park this season. Families can enjoy more than just the market by creating memories with their children, playing at the park, enjoying the pump track, and watching local musicians perform on Friday evenings.

Ultimately, local markets are an important reflection of our communities. The Open Air Market is an example of a simple concept with a huge impact, fostering community ties and connections. These markets not only support social connections but also generate economic impact for small communities, allowing small businesses, farmers, makers, and young entrepreneurs to circulate cash flow throughout local communities rather than to large box and chain stores.

Local markets demonstrate how shopping, collaboration, and shared experiences can all contribute to a stronger, more connected community.
