American Legion Riders Chili Cook-Off ladles out another mouthwatering success

The ninth annual American Legion Riders Chili Cook-off delivered another great success April 14 at the Stockbridge Mackinder-Glenn Post 510.

“We had a huge turnout,” said Becky Whitaker, a member of the ALR Chili Cook-Off Committee. She estimated in excess of 150 people attended. “We really appreciate the judges, contestants, donors and everyone who attended,” she said.

ALR members from Leslie, Pinckney, Grand Blanc, Garden City and Livonia attended, and more than 30 businesses from the local community and surrounding areas donated items and gift certificates for the​ drawings and raffle items.

Donated items ranged in value from $5 to $300. ​Twelve contestants competed in the chili cook-off, and 10 vendors participated.

People’s Choice Award—Bill Cool and grandson Joseph Cool receive the People’s Choice Award for “Billy’s Chili,” presenter Jerry Kunzelman.

Judges Choice—First place: “Frasers Chili” by Dana Fraser. Second place: Dick Burton’s “Chili by Dick Burton.” Third place: “Willy’s Chili” by the Stellbergers

People’s Choice Award—”Billy’s Chili” by Bill Cool

Best Booth—Viv Hoy’s “Bad to the Bone”

In addition, Bob Hoffman won the grand prize, a Branson Trip, donated by John Leodler, plus $500 from raffle tickets sold beforehand.
