Riders from all over Michigan as well as Ohio and Canada, and as distant as New York, Washington, and Utah were attracted by the unique geologic area of lakes and hills. Mike Casey of Aberdeen Bike & Outdoors, Chelsea, described the course as “a hidden gem in southern Michigan supporting all kinds of biking and enjoyment of nature.”

The Wolverine was a two lap or 100km (60 mile) race, while the Black Bear was a 50km (30 mile) race. Special categories for Fat Tire and Single Speed competition were included as well as a 50km Tandem grouping. There was also a 10-mile ride. In addition to biking competitors, approximately 24 volunteers and 100 or so observers and family members were in attendance.

Weather conditions were very good for March with sunshine and temperatures into the 40s. Road conditions were tougher with snow and ice in areas, and all riders received a degree of mud coating. Local rider, Tom Clark of Munith described the stretch of Cassidy Road as “particularly rugged.”  Other local riders included Deb Roels of Munith and Traci Brown of Gregory.

Lori and Gary Rideout of Pittsburg, PA had typical responses for the day. Gary enjoyed the course and wanted to stop and take pictures. Lori, a first-time competitor, loved the courteous and supportive riders. She particularly enjoyed the mutual support of other female riders. Approximately 20% of the field were women.

Angela Webster of Kitchener, Ontario, a second place finisher in Women’s 100km, uttered a response that was representative of the group’s, saying, “I love to ride in Michigan.”
