Golden Years Luncheon
Golden Years Senior Luncheon: social hour and bingo…
By Tina Cole-Mullins
Cold temperatures did not deter the “Golden Seniors” as they gathered at the Stockbridge Township hall on a recent Friday for their weekly social hour starting at 10:30 am, with lunch served at noon and then bingo.
Hosted by volunteer Betti Wetherell the past 8 years and by Geri Uihlein who joined last spring. Meals were provided by Tri-County Meals on Wheels.
As a volunteer “My heart is filled every Friday and I loved showing you why.” Geri commented about her time with the seniors.
In the early years; at least 25 years as some recall, meals were provided and prepared by organizers. No one in attendance could recall who those ladies were.
Attendee’s travel from as far as the outskirts of Howell, Jackson and Leslie to socialize with local residents. Various mixed topics could be heard among the group. They included their health, weather, school sports, politics and the current book of the month for those who participate in the monthly book club.
Mary Everitt (Leslie) takes an Eatran bus from her Leslie home to attend the luncheons she has been attending for over twenty years. Mary was proud to share accolades of daughter, Diane Byrum who has served in the House of Representative and Senate and currently serves on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.
Thelma Brooks (Jackson) formerly of Stockbridge still makes the trip weekly to check in with her friends and enjoy the socialization of the group.
Gene & Fran Smith (Pinckney) were referred by friends who they join each week to catch up.
Local attendee’s could be found throughout the group with Dick & Sally Long enjoying their time and Ruth Camp being the newest to join this past year.
The Stockbridge Golden Years Senior Citizens’ luncheon meets every Friday in the Stockbridge Township Hall for those ages 60+, a $3 donation is suggested but not required. If you would like to join this group contact Betti Wetherell at 517-206-9035 to RSVP by 5 pm Wednesdays.
