April 7, 2025: Residents are invited to review Livingston County’s newly published “2025 Sustainable Agriculture, Food Systems, and Rural Environments Plan” at https://milivcounty.gov/planning/ag-food-rural-preservation-plan.
The Planning Department’s goal in crafting this plan was to be proactive in safeguarding our area’s agricultural capacity and assisting each local unit in developing tailored approaches to support farmers, protect farmland, and promote sustainable practices.
The plan’s Vision Statement is a perfect summary of what compelled the Planning Department to tackle this dynamic issue:
“Livingston County envisions a future where agriculture remains a thriving, dynamic cornerstone of our economy and character. Rooted in our rich history and supported by sustainable practices, our community will continue to cultivate a resilient agricultural sector that adapts to modern challenges while preserving the vitality of our farmland for generations to come.”
With focus on key areas such as farmer support, soil and water stewardship, localizing food system infrastructure, and farmland preservation, the plan is full of best practices and objectives that can be utilized to keep our communities’ rural character that is deeply valued.
The topics covered in the new plan are also crucial to the Planning Department’s work on their 2025 Livingston County Master Plan. Sustainable agriculture, food systems, and rural environment preservation are all areas that will be discussed in greater detail in the Master Plan.
