Richard Ralph Steinaway Aug. 9, 1950 to June 8, 2022

Knoxville – Richard Ralph Steinaway, 71, of New Market, Tenn. died at Fort Sanders Hospital from a ruptured brain aneurysm.

Born August 9, 1950, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he was the son of Waldo and Mary Ellen (McLaughlin) Steinaway, who proceeded him in death. On April 7, 1979, he was united in marriage to Patrice Marie Armstrong Tremblay, who survives.

Rich was a residential and commercial contractor, the ultimate handyman, he was always willing to help family members and friends on house projects or simple repair jobs. He was a wood craftsman and restored many old houses with his wife throughout the years. He enjoyed photography, dancing (especially to The Rolling Stones), music and was an avid shell collector. Rich served in The United States Navy in the Vietnam War on the Coral Sea. He was a graduate of Chelsea High School (1968). He received his Associate of Arts Degree from Cabot College, Hayward, California, in Parks Technology (Park Ranger) with a minor in Horticulture (1979). He was a member of the American Legion Post 0113 in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Every person that met Rich adored him. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend; he will be missed for his infectious laugh, brilliant smile, and fun-loving spirit.

Survivors include his daughter: Angelina (Flint) Stocker of Summerville, South Carolina. Sons: Michael Roy Steinaway (partner Angela Albright) of San Antonio, Texas, Matthew Paul Steinaway (partner Kelly Stapleton) of New Market, Tennessee, and Charles David Tremblay (partner Rachel Longhenry) of Morristown, Tennessee. Grandchildren: Brooke, Grace, and Benjamin (Shannon) Stocker of Summerville, South Carolina, Ken (Ash) Steinaway of Clarksville, Tennessee, Megean and Taylor Steinaway of Pinckney, Michigan, Trever Yates of Battle Creek, Michigan, Crosby Tremblay and Nikolai Buchanan of Morristown, Tennessee. Sisters: Linda Schoch, Barbeau, Michigan, Helen (Dick) Scripter, Nahma, Michigan. Sister-in-law: Dianna (Dale) Burgher, Stockbridge, Michigan. Brother-in-laws: Richard (Janet) Armstrong, South Lyon, Michigan, and Doug Armstrong, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

He was proceeded in death by three brothers: Arthur (2011), Waldo (1997) and Paul (1973) Steinaway, and two brother-in-laws: Fred Schoch (2019) and Michael Armstrong (2005).

A memorial service is planned on Edisto Island for November 12, 2022.

Rich was passionate about donating blood to the American Red Cross and protecting and preserving our environment, particularly the ocean. Memorial contributions can be made to The Ocean Conservancy at or by donating blood to the American Red Cross.
