Student of the Month: 7th grader Madison Rusnock shares the joy of reading

by Cindy Lance

Seventh grade student Madison Rusnock is an avid reader who loves books.

“Madison gets so much joy from reading and understands deeply how it informs her own writing and makes people think about the universal themes in our society,” said teacher Pam Gower.

In order to help her peers get all of the benefits of reading, Madison volunteers to talk about books in front of the class. She also volunteered to show the class how she reads books on Hoopla, a service of the Capital Area District Library.

“Madison has even offered her help with organizing my classroom library to make it easier for students to find good books,” Gower said.

Madison’s favorite books are the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series.

She also enjoys math, science, social studies and band. Outside of the classroom, she belongs to the National Junior Honor Society, is a member of the Student Council and works on the yearbook.

Lana Jaworski, middle school science teacher, said Madison’s “curiosity for the natural world is evident in science class!”

“Her questions are thoughtful and take a step beyond the material taught,” Jaworski said.

Madison, the oldest child of Steve and Jennifer, is a big sister to two other siblings.

Parents and grandparents on both sides of the family are credited with playing the biggest influence in her life.

Madison loves living in the Stockbridge area because her family has “property to ride their four-wheeler (and) raise chickens.”

“It seems like Stockbridge has just the right amount of students; you don’t feel lost,” she said.

She lives by the guideline of “Just Keep Swimming.” Whenever Madison gets tired, the phrase provides the motivation to keep going.  This motivation she hopes will take her to Michigan State University, hopefully, with a spot on the basketball team. Eventually, Madison would like to own and manage a hotel.
