Obituary: Donald Steffey

Donald Steffey: September 24, 1925 to May 22, 2019

 

 

Donald Steffey, age 93, of Stockbridge, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at his home. He was born on September 24, 1925, the son of Irving and Ida (Pierce) Steffey.

On February 18, 1948, he married Sally Ann Briggs, and she survives. Also surviving are his children: Larry (Holly) Steffey of Stockbridge, Linda Smith of Stockbridge, Ron (Wanda) Steffey of British Columbia, Shirley Steffey of Alexandria, Virginia and Mary (Larry) Krummrey of Stockbridge; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brother, John (Dee) Steffey of Jackson; and sister-in-law, Melvina Steffey of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Steffey.

Don had lived in the Stockbridge area his entire life. He was born on the same farm where he also died. He graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1943. Don served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan during the occupation. Don took over his family’s small farm with livestock and an orchard, turning it into a prosperous dairy farm. He was a member of Michigan Milk Producers Association.

In his early years, Don enjoyed bird and deer hunting. He also enjoyed kayaking on the Manistee River and snowmobiling up North and in Canada. His greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge with Craig Goodlock officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Stockbridge Area Emergency Services Authority or Stockbridge Area Educational Foundation.
