Big changes have come to boy scouting. One of the biggest changes is in the name: “Boy Scouts of America” is now “Scouting America.” This change reflects scouting being more inclusive and geared to the entire family. The local Cub Scout Pack 768 will now be known as a Family Pack 768 and is open to both boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade.

After its official beginning on Feb. 8, 1910, scouting quickly evolved to include the practice of earning merit badges. Now, 115 years later, the evolution continues to include the name change as well as welcoming girls to participate.

While the look of scouting has changed, it still has the same goal: To develop responsible citizenship and self-reliance. Scouting America will continue participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and career-orientated events.

Mark your calendar!

• On Aug. 16, at 2 p.m., the Family Pack 768 will host a game day for kindergarten through fifth-grade students who wish to find out more about the new family scouting programs. This event will be held at the Stockbridge American Legion hall.
• On Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m., Family Scouting Round-Up  will be held, also at the American Legion hall in Stockbridge.
