From CADL Stockbridge

In January, join a book group or watch a movie

by Head Librarian Sherri McConnell

If reading is your favorite winter activity and you like to discuss what you’re reading with others, CADL Stockbridge offers two book discussion groups. The After-hours Book Group meets at the library on the third Wednesday of the month (Jan. 18) at 6:30 p.m. The group will be discussing “The Heirloom Garden” by Viola Shipman.

The Third Thursday Book Group meets at the library on the third Thursday (Jan. 19) at 11:30 a.m. The group will be discussing “The Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles. Ask Stockbridge Library staff for details.

When I think of January, I think of staying indoors, eating popcorn, and watching movies. I do get outside and cross-country ski on nearby trails, but then I get to warm up with a movie and hot chocolate. CADL offers several ways to watch movies.

Both new and old DVD and Blu-ray movies can be checked out for seven days. If Stockbridge doesn’t have the movie you’re looking for, another CADL branch is likely to have it. You can place a hold from home or have library staff help you.

There also are two streaming services, free with your library card. Hoopla has movies and series for all age ranges including a highlighted kids’ section, exercise and yoga videos, collections from “The Great Courses,” and documentaries from the Curiosity Stream channel. Our other streaming service, Kanopy, also offers an excellent kids’ section with series from public television including “Sesame Street,” and “Read Aloud” video storybooks. You also will find classic and foreign films, family films, reality TV series, British TV series and documentaries to name a few. Find your next movie adventure with your library card.

Capital Area District Libraries’ Stockbridge Branch is located at 200 Wood St. For more information, call 517-851-7810 or visit cadl.org.
