SCN Elects Terry Sommer to its Board of Directors

SCN’s newly elected director Terry Sommer says activities that bring her happiness and fulfillment include, “being with family and friends, raising animals, singing, gardening, and driving my tractor in the open fields.”

During its Jan. 8 meeting, SCN’s board of directors elected Terry Sommer by unanimous vote to its ranks.

“We’re a hardworking board, and we’re pleased to have Terry’s involvement,” Patrice Johnson, president and editor in chief, said. “Terry brings a terrific skillset to the organization.”

When asked why Sommer chose to add the commitment to her already busy schedule, Sommer smiled. “Having a quality, central point of local news and information is critical for maintaining a sense of community. I’m honored to be part of it.”

SCN’s stated mission is “to promote the common good and welfare of residents in the greater Stockbridge area through the collection and dissemination of local educational news and social-benefit information.” Sommer filled a vacancy created Jan. 1 with VP Diane Rockall’s resignation due to time constraints. Johnson thanked Rockall for her excellent service and said she is pleased Rockall will continue to contribute to the volunteer, non-profit organization.

Sommer, a 65-plus-year resident of the Stockbridge area and current Township Trustee, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from MSU. She retired after more than 30 years of teaching law and computer technology in Howell schools.

Born and raised on the local family farm, Sommer married her Stockbridge High School sweetheart, Doug. The couple, married 50 years, have three children and two grandchildren.

Hobbies? Sommer said, “I enjoy performing with the Stockbridge Area Festival Chorus and participating in the Stockbridge Area Garden Club.” She also serves as the disbursing treasurer for her church.

Other activities that bring her happiness and fulfillment include, “being with family and friends, raising animals, singing, gardening, and driving my tractor in the open fields.”
