Stockbridge Honors 50 Year Anniversary of 1971 State Runner-Up Basketball Team

It was a night to remember for Stockbridge fans young and old as one of the best sports teams in school history was honored at halftime of the Panther football game Friday, October 1.

A large crowd gathered as the 1971 mens basketball team reunited for the 50 year anniversary of Class C State Runner-Up finish.

Twelve of the teams 14 players and well as coach Phil Hora and several of the cheerleading squad returned to Stockbridge for a historical night full of laughs, stories and lots of memories of 1971 team that made its state finals run before falling to Shelby 71-57 in the state championship game.

The Panthers still hold numerous state and school records from that team that went 18-0 in the regular season and went 6-0 in the playoffs before falling to Shelby. The team still holds the school record for most points in a game with 113 in an era that did not allow dunking or had a three-point line. They scored over 100 points four times and over 90 points twelve times that season.

Jesse Campbell, the schools all time leader in points and rebounds is still the state record holder for career rebounds and blocked shots in a game.

Plaques were presented to the players at halftime as the team was announced and the team met fans and friends in the school after the game.

Members of the team that returned to the reunion were Clyde Whitaker, Gary Allen, Gary Topping, Rod Owen, Thom Campbell, Fred Kester, Tom Kennedy, Todd Myers, Coach Phil Hora, Gary Ludtke, Jesse Campbell, John Flannery, Dave Chrisinski, and John Terrell, Missing from the reunion was Craig Collins and Jan Shackelford is deceased.
